An Awesome book
Over the weekend, I finished reading the book titled “The End of Poverty” by Jeffrey Sachs. This book is a treat for Welfare economics buffs. It examines in detail, the reasons why in the past two centuries some countries have grown exponentially while other are stuck in the poverty trap. It also describes the challenges before modern economies to end extreme poverty by 2015. Jeffrey Sachs has described his experiences of working with complex economic situations like Bolivian Hyperinflation, Russian revamp, Return of Poland etc in a lucid and easy to understand manner. My favorite chapters: India and China. Per Dr Sachs Indian growth model appears to be more robust as compared to China, as in the Indian economy growth is being fostered by internal consumption, compared to a cheap export oriented growth registered by China. A must read and truly an academic treat. |
